Types of teeth whitening
There are two ways to whiten, and they do not compete: they change how long you wait to see the result and who controls each application. What decides which one suits you is your timing, your enamel and your gums.
In-clinic teeth whitening
In the clinic: the gum is isolated and a high-concentration hydrogen peroxide gel is applied in a single session. It is the fast route: you see the change the same day, and the shade settles a few days after the session. Teeth often feel sensitive to cold afterwards; it usually lasts one or two days, sometimes a few more, and goes away on its own.
Outpatient teeth whitening
At home, with custom trays, you wear a carbamide peroxide gel overnight for two weeks. Carbamide peroxide is the same oxidising agent as hydrogen peroxide, bound to urea: a 10 % gel releases around 3.6 % hydrogen peroxide, and it lets it out over several hours.
Does it cause less discomfort than a hydrogen peroxide gel also worn in a tray? A meta-analysis of randomised trials compared them at home: the same sensitivity, the same gum irritation and a similar change in colour, with a slight edge for carbamide in one of the two ways of measuring it.
So the choice is not about which one is stronger. If you have a date coming up, the session in the clinic; if there is no hurry, the tray spreads the work over two weeks.

If you already have retainers from previous orthodontics and they are in good condition, they are reused and the price is 140 €. This package includes: a dental cleaning and 5 whitening syringes, with custom-made trays.

Requirements for teeth whitening treatment
Whitening is not done on a mouth that has not been checked. These are the situations where something has to be sorted out first, or where it simply does not apply: Under 18s: it is not done.
That is not our criterion, it is Annex III entry 12 of Regulation (EC) 1223/2009, which bans these products for minors and requires the first use of each cycle to be carried out or supervised by the dentist. Decay, inflamed gums or periodontitis: treated first. The gel gets in wherever the tooth is open and through the sulcus of an inflamed gum, and that really does hurt.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: postponed, as a precaution. Marked tooth sensitivity: it is not a barrier, but it changes the plan. The concentration goes down, the treatment is stretched out and a desensitiser is used beforehand. White spots from fluorosis: whitening lightens the tooth around them and the spot stays where it is, sometimes more visible.
There are other routes for that. Fillings, crowns and veneers do not whiten. If you have restorations on your front teeth, we whiten first and replace them afterwards so they match the new shade. The other way round forces them to be redone. Baby teeth and a known allergy to the product.
At-home teeth whitening procedure
If you choose the tray, this is the full protocol. The two weeks are not a commercial minimum: they are the time the gel needs to work at that concentration. Tray whitening, step by step:
A complete oral cleaning is performed. Measurements of the mouth are taken to make custom trays. Once the trays are made, they will be delivered with 5 whitening gels. 3 Gels will be used during the 2 weeks of treatment and the remaining 2 will be kept for maintenance.
After 2 weeks the treatment will be finished. Additional bleaching gels may be used up to one year later to maintain the white shade. Gels during treatment and maintenance should be kept in the refrigerator. Perform the treatment at night after tooth brushing (flossing is recommended).
In the morning, when removing the trays, we should rinse the teeth with water. It is recommended to wait a few minutes before brushing to avoid damaging the tooth enamel. If you have any additional questions we will be happy to assist you.

The main whitening agent used in the treatment is hydrogen peroxide, which is in gel form and is applied to the teeth.
The chemical reaction that occurs between the gel and the dentine, which the peroxide reaches through the enamel, allows the particles that cause the darkening to be broken down, achieving greater luminosity and clarity in the teeth. How long do teeth whitening results last?
The result is not permanent. The tooth stains again with the same things that stained it the first time, and the shade gets back part of the lost colour over the months; in a clinical trial of at-home tray whitening, after two years the teeth were still lighter than before starting.
How long it lasts for you depends more on your habits than on the treatment. A smoker will notice the shade dropping sooner: in the trials with smokers, the colour held slightly worse over the following weeks.
That is why the package includes two spare syringes that are good for up to a year afterwards, and using them for a few nights when you notice it goes further than repeating the whole treatment.
And it is not for everyone. If you have marked sensitivity, receding gums or exposed necks, the plan changes: the concentration goes down and the treatment is stretched out. That is what the assessment looks at before anything is decided, and if your case is not one for whitening we say so too.
Recommendations for keeping teeth white
Teeth darken along two different routes, and it is worth knowing which one is yours because they are not treated the same way. From the outside, with pigment from coffee, tea, wine and tobacco deposited on the enamel. And from the inside, because over the years the enamel thins and lets more of the dentine show through, and dentine is naturally yellow.
That is why a cleaning does not leave teeth white: it removes what is on the outside. Whitening acts on what is inside, because the peroxide crosses the enamel and reaches the dentine, which is where the colour lives.
It also explains its limit. If the darkening comes from tetracycline staining, from fluorosis or from a tooth that has had root canal treatment, whitening does little or nothing, and the answer is dental veneers. Saying so beforehand saves paying twice.
Whitening is not permanent: the shade comes back slowly as the tooth stains again. To make the shade hold:
During the treatment, cut down on coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco. The trials that have measured it do not find that coffee ruins the result, so a strict white diet is not needed.
After that, if you drink coffee daily, a maintenance gel of the kind you take home goes further than repeating the whole treatment. Tobacco stains the enamel, and giving it up also shows in the colour. A yearly cleaning removes surface pigment before it settles.
We are not going to tell you that any food whitens teeth, because there is nothing showing that it does. What is measured is the opposite: what stains them.
