Deep cleaning cost in Barcelona: scaling and root planing at €60

At the clinic, scaling and root planing, which many people know as a deep cleaning, is listed at €60. How many areas of your mouth need treating, and in how many appointments, is decided by the periodontal assessment, which is free, and you leave it with the total in writing before anything starts. Afterward, each maintenance visit with a cleaning costs €30.

This page is only about price: what you pay for, what the total depends on, how it differs from a regular cleaning and what it costs to keep the result. What periodontitis is, how scaling is done and what you’ll feel afterward are explained on the page about scaling and root planing in Barcelona.

What you pay for with scaling and root planing

Scaling cleans the tooth root below the gum line, inside the pockets that periodontitis forms, where a toothbrush can’t reach. At the scaling appointment:

  • The area is numbed, usually with local anesthesia, so it doesn’t hurt while we work.
  • Plaque and tartar stuck to the root are removed, with hand curettes and ultrasonic tips.
  • The root surface is smoothed, so the gum can calm down and fit snugly against the tooth again.

Before that comes the periodontal assessment, and that isn’t charged. With a millimeter probe we measure the depth around each tooth, and with X-rays we look at the bone. That’s how we know which areas need scaling and which don’t, and that’s what sets the quote.

What the total depends on

What moves the final figure is how many areas of the mouth have pockets. Not every mouth with bleeding gums needs it, and it isn’t always needed in the whole mouth:

  • A few teeth with pockets: we work on those alone, and the treatment is short.
  • Pockets throughout the mouth: it’s treated by areas, in halves or quadrants, over several appointments.
  • No pockets: there’s no scaling to pay for. If the gums are inflamed but the bone is still in place, a cleaning and better care at home are enough.

That’s why we don’t give a total without looking first: the same name, deep cleaning, can mean one tooth or the whole mouth. What you do get before the first scaling appointment is the plan in writing: which areas, in how many appointments and the total price.

Cleaning or deep cleaning: they don’t cost the same because they aren’t the same

Many people ask for a deep cleaning thinking of a more thorough version of a regular cleaning. They’re two different treatments. An oral cleaning removes tartar above the gum line and costs €30; scaling works on the root below it and is listed at €60.

If there are pockets, a cleaning on its own doesn’t reach them and doesn’t treat them. If there aren’t any, scaling adds nothing and we won’t suggest it. What decides which one you need is the probing in the periodontal assessment, not the feeling that more cleaning is needed.

How many appointments and how long it takes

From the first visit to maintenance, this is the order:

  1. Free periodontal assessment, with probing, X-rays and the plan in writing.
  2. Home hygiene: we show you how to clean between your teeth with interdental brushes in your size.
  3. Scaling by areas. The whole mouth usually adds up to one to two hours in the chair, in a single appointment, in two or in four.
  4. Re-evaluation, once the gums have healed, to probe again.
  5. Maintenance, with regular checkups.

If at the re-evaluation a pocket is still deep and bleeding, we consider repeating that area or, in some cases, periodontal surgery. If it were needed, we’d quote it separately and in writing before doing it.

What it costs to keep the result

Periodontitis is controlled, not cured once and for all, and what sustains the improvement are the maintenance visits. At each one we probe again, clean, and go over only what has built up plaque again. The maintenance cleaning costs €30, and if an area needs scaling again, it’s charged at its list price.

The interval ranges from three to twelve months depending on your risk: it gets longer if your gums stay healthy and shorter if they start bleeding again. Looking after your hygiene at home between visits helps space them out.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a deep cleaning cost in Barcelona?

On our price list, scaling and root planing is listed at €60. The total depends on how many areas have pockets, and you know it before we start: it comes from the periodontal assessment, which is free, and we give it to you in writing.

How much does a regular cleaning cost compared with a deep cleaning?

They’re two things with different prices: the cleaning, above the gum line, costs €30, and scaling the root, below it, €60. Whether you need one, the other or both is decided by the probing, not by the name you ask for.

How many deep cleaning sessions are needed?

It depends on how many areas need treating. For the whole mouth, it’s usually one to two hours in the chair in total, in one appointment, in two covering half the mouth each or in four covering one quadrant each. With only a few teeth, it takes less.

What do I have to pay after a deep cleaning?

The maintenance visits, with their €30 cleaning, every three to twelve months depending on how your gums respond. They’re what preserves the result of the scaling, because plaque builds up again over time.

Does a deep cleaning hurt?

Not while we work, because it’s usually done under local anesthesia. Over the next few days the gums may be a little sore and the teeth sensitive to cold; it’s usually mild and eases within a few days.
