Amalgam removal cost Barcelona: priced per tooth, composite filling at €40

Removing an amalgam filling does not have its own line on our price list: we price it tooth by tooth at the first visit, which is free, once we have seen the X-ray. What goes in its place does have a fixed price: a tooth-colored composite filling costs €40, and if a large part of the tooth is missing, a reconstruction costs €50 and a crown €270.

This page is about what you pay. Why amalgams are replaced, what they contain and how they are removed without breathing in the vapor is explained on the page about silver and mercury amalgam removal in Barcelona.

What amalgam removal costs at the clinic

There is no single figure because every amalgam leaves the tooth in a different state. A small, well-defined one is replaced with composite in the same appointment; a large one that took up half the molar can leave the walls of the tooth too thin for a simple filling.

That is why the quote is made with the X-ray in front of us. It shows which amalgams leak or have decay underneath, which ones can stay and what each gap will need. We give it to you in writing, tooth by tooth, before touching any of them.

What you pay depending on how the tooth is left

The removal always ends with the tooth repaired. What changes is how, and that is the main thing that moves the price:

  • Composite filling: €40. This is the usual case. The cavity is cleaned, checked for decay and filled with tooth-colored resin, hardened with light before you leave.
  • Reconstruction: €50. When the tooth is missing a large piece, its shape is rebuilt with resin, without a crown.
  • Zirconia or porcelain crown: €270. If the amalgam was very large and little healthy tooth is left, a crown covers the whole tooth.
  • Inlay. It does not have a line on the price list: if your tooth needs one, it comes with its price in the written quote.

We tell you which one each tooth needs at the assessment, with the X-ray. If a crown or an inlay is needed, you know before we start.

What makes the quote go up or down

  • How many amalgams need replacing. We check each one and tell you which ones leak and which ones can stay. We do not replace sound fillings just because they are amalgam.
  • Their size. The larger the amalgam was, the more tooth is missing once it is out, and the more likely it is to move from a filling to a reconstruction or a crown.
  • What is underneath. Decay hidden under an old filling is cleaned in the same appointment, but it can make the gap bigger.
  • The reason. If an amalgam is broken or leaking, it is replaced for health reasons. If you want it removed for appearance, that can be done too, with the plan explained first: which teeth are treated and what goes into each one.

What every removal includes

Removing an amalgam is not just drilling. According to the FDA, the U.S. health agency, an amalgam releases more mercury vapor when it is placed or removed than at any other time. That is why every removal is done with two protections:

  • A rubber dam, a sheet that isolates the tooth from the rest of your mouth so you do not swallow debris.
  • Water and high-volume suction, which cool the drilling and carry away the particles and the vapor.

Both are used with every amalgam, large or small, because they are how it is removed, not an extra.

Do they all have to come out?

No, and that is also money you do not spend. A well-sealed amalgam with no decay underneath can stay where it is: the British Oral Health Foundation advises replacing a filling only when it is worn, broken or decayed, because removing one that works means drilling healthy tooth.

Since January 1, 2025, the European Union no longer allows new amalgams to be placed except for a specific medical need. The rule is about the fillings being placed, not the ones you already have: it does not require you to replace them.

How many appointments it takes

  1. A free first visit, with the X-ray and a written quote for each tooth.
  2. Removal and filling in the same appointment, for the majority of teeth.
  3. Extra appointments only if a crown or an inlay is needed; how many is set out in your plan.

You leave with the tooth repaired and can go about your day as usual. Any discomfort in the hours after comes from the appointment, not from the mercury: the anesthesia, which takes a while to wear off, the gum where the dam was held and the jaw, tired from staying open.

How to get your quote

The first step is the first visit, which is free of charge. With the X-ray in front of us, we tell you which amalgams are worth replacing, what each tooth is restored with and how much it costs, in writing.

You can book an appointment online with your name, email and mobile number and we will call you, or phone us at +34 639 65 33 51; we are also open on Saturday mornings. If you would like to tell us about your case first, use the online dental consultation. The price of fillings and every other treatment is on the clinic’s price list.

Frequently asked questions

How much does amalgam removal cost in Barcelona?

At the clinic it is quoted tooth by tooth at the first visit, which is free. What goes in its place has a list price: €40 for a composite filling, €50 for a reconstruction and €270 for a crown, depending on how much of the tooth is left.

How much does it cost to replace an amalgam with composite?

A composite filling costs €40 on our price list and is placed in the same appointment in which the amalgam is removed. If removing it reveals decay or a lot of missing tooth, we tell you first what changes and how much.

What if the tooth is cracked once the amalgam is out?

If it has lost a lot of structure, a filling is not enough and it needs an inlay or a crown. A zirconia or porcelain crown costs €270 on the price list; an inlay is quoted separately.

Is it worth replacing an amalgam that is in good condition?

For health reasons it is not usually needed: removing it means drilling healthy tooth. It is replaced when it leaks, has broken, there is a mercury allergy or you prefer a tooth-colored filling. We tell you after looking at the X-ray.

How much does the first visit cost?

Nothing. It includes the X-ray, a check of each amalgam and the written quote, and it does not commit you to starting.
